This year’s Rose City Comic Con was so memorable, but one of the standout events was the 2024 Drink & Draw charity event, supported by Dark Horse Comics, held September 6, 2024 from 8-10PM at Spirit of ’77 in Portland, OR. With a night filled with art, drinks, and some of the industry’s most talented creators, we not only celebrated the spirit of creativity but also raised $3,354 for the Hero Initiative—an incredible cause dedicated to supporting comic book creators in need.
Held in the heart of downtown Portland, fans and artists gathered together for a casual, interactive experience like no other. With access to ample paper, pencils, and OLO markers, attendees were invited to draw alongside some of their comic book heroes. This unique, relaxed setting was filled with delicious food, drinks, and camaraderie amongst fans and talent. A dream for comic book lovers!
The event featured an all-star lineup of comic book creators who not only offered valuable auction items, but mingled with fans throughout the evening. Special guests included:
- Zack Davisson – Renowned writer, translator, and expert in Japanese folklore, Davisson brought his unique perspective on storytelling to the event, offering fans insights into his creative process. Round theme: Yokai Monsters
- Jody Houser – With a resume that includes everything from Star Wars to Doctor Who, Houser’s presence was a huge draw for fans eager to hear more about her experiences writing for some of the biggest franchises in the world. Round theme: Star Wars
- Christopher Priest – A legendary writer known for redefining iconic characters such as Black Panther and Deathstroke, Priest’s insights into the industry and storytelling captivated both new and longtime comic book fans. Round theme: Black Adam Panther
- Patton Oswalt & Jordan Blum – The comedic duo behind Minor Threats graced the event with their wit and artistic contributions, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at their creative collaboration. Patton, also known for his work in comedy and voice acting, brought a fun energy to the evening. Round theme: 90s alt-rock versions of D-list comics villains and heroes
These incredible creator judges had the difficult task of rounding the room during their curated themed rounds and selecting their favorite drawing. Fans with the most loved drawings at the end of the night won over $1,000 worth of exclusive prizes from Dark Horse Comics, Wacom, Oni Press, and OLO. Prizes included:

The true heart of the evening was the charity aspect. Thanks to the generosity of our attendees and the passion of our participating artists, we successfully raised $3,354 for the Hero Initiative. This nonprofit organization plays a vital role in providing financial assistance and support to comic book creators who have brought joy to readers but now face unexpected hardships. Whether it’s through medical aid, financial help, or promoting a sense of community, the Hero Initiative’s work is essential, and we’re proud to have contributed to their mission.
We can’t wait until next year. Thank you to our honored guests, fans who attended, and staff who worked hard to make this event possible.
