Kid’s Dance Party by Geek Girl Strong

Kid’s Dance Party by Geek Girl Strong

Did you know that dance is a fun way for the whole family to exercise, feel great, and fight cabin fever from being at home more than usual? Here is a list of musical movement games for the entire family, thanks to Robyn Warren of Geek Girl Strong! Be sure to sign up for Spotify and have access to Geek Girl Strong’s Rose City Jr. playlist before getting started.

Share your sweet dance moves using #RCJrAtHome and make sure to follow Robyn on Twitter and Instagram to say “Thanks” through dance!

Animal Dance Party

Start playing Geek Girl Strong’s Rose City Jr. playlist and get everyone dancing. Then shout out an animal and have everyone act out how they think that animal would dance.

Freeze Dance

Play a song from the Geek Girl Strong’s Rose City Jr. playlist and get everyone dancing. Surprise everyone else by randomly pausing the music and tell them to “FREEZE”! Encourage everyone to make silly poses for extra fun.

The Transforming Freeze Dance Party

Take “Animal Dance Party” and “Freeze Dance” then mix them together! This time, tell everyone how they should freeze right before you pause the music. For added fun, have everyone vote for the best pose and then that person gets to choose the next animal that everyone transforms into!

Dance Your Feelings

If your children are old enough to understand that music can make you feel emotions, take the above activities and switch out “Animal” for an emotion or feeling of choice! What does a happy dance look like? A sad dance?

Lip Sync Battle

Another one for older kiddos and the rest of the family. Have each person choose a song from the Geek Girl Strong’s Rose City Jr. playlist and have everyone prepare a performance! If you’d like you can add some competition to it by awarding a winner for whomever mouthed the lyrics the best and had the best dance moves!

Share The Move

Queue up some music and have your kids stand in a circle. Choose a person to go first (birthday boy, oldest girl, youngest sibling are all good determining factors) and let them show off one cool dance move. The next person must repeat their dance move, then add their own. This continues around the circle, the dance routine becoming more complicated the longer they last. If a person messes up, they’re out. The last person standing who can do all the dance moves is the winner.

Musical Balloon

Give each person a balloon that they must keep in the air while the music plays by tapping it up into the air. The last person with their balloon in the air when the music stops wins!

Musical Chairs (or Pillows, or anything you can sit on really…)

Line up chairs alternating the direction that they are facing and ensure that there is one less chair than there are family members. Turn on the Geek Girl Strong’s Rose City Jr. playlist and have everyone walk around the chairs. When you stop the music, everyone must sit down. The person without a seat is out. Take one chair out from one of the ends and the game is repeated until the winner and runner-up go for the last chair!

Lastly, Limbo is always a great go to. Put on the playlist and find out how low every can go!

We hope you enjoy the included playlist and at least one of the games listed with your family!

Instructions: Each PDF is intended to print on an 8.5”x11” sheet of paper. 1-5 are quartersheets, meant to be cut in half and then in half again, so you get four little pictures from just one piece of paper. Some of them have space intentionally left empty so they can be used as note cards, if you like! Number 6 is a half sheet card set, meant to be cut in half once (the short way) and then each piece folded in half, so you have a little greeting card. Number 7 is a double-sided single card: you fold it in half the short way, and then in half again, so you have a card with a picture on the front and another little picture and the greeting inside. They will fit inside most card or letter envelopes, if you wish to send them in the mail.

Suggestions for Colorists: These characters can be any color you (or they) want to be. Pick the colors you like working with, and have fun! If you don’t like it, just print another page and try again.

Squatch Squad Social-distancing Scavenger Hunt

Squatch Squad Social-Distancing Scavenger Hunt

We hope everyone is staying home, staying safe, and staying healthy. But if, like us, you’re suffering from a bit of cabin fever after having been in your house for what feels like years on end, we’ve got an excellent idea for you and your local community. Why not organize a neighborhood social-distancing scavenger hunt?

And who better to represent the wild vibes of a hunt than our very own Dave the Sasquatch. Dave the Sasquatch is Rose City Comic Con’s mascot. He love comics as much as he loves Portland. From biking down the river front esplanade to enjoying the sights around Portland, Dave tries to make the most of living in one of the world’s best cities. Dave was created by artist and returning RCCC special guest Levi Hastings. (Levi lives in Seattle, but we don’t hold it against him.) And Dave wants YOU to join his Squatch Squad and organize a neighborhood social-distancing scavenger hunt, wild child!

Recruit your Neighbors
The first step would be getting the word out and organizing your neighbors! Make sure to keep your distance when organizing. No need to go knocking on doors, try to connect with your local community digitally. If you’re a part of a group chat or neighborhood Facebook group, why not post this article there to recruit nearby neighbors to join you!

Display your Dave
Families who want to participate can print out the below Squatch Squad seal, featuring Dave, in all his squatchy glory. Then you can tape the seal up in your front window, wherever neighbors walking by would see it.

Download the 8.5×11 printable PDF

Begin the Hunt
Once your local community has been organized, go for a walk! Stay at least 6 feet away from people you don’t live with, if you happen to see your neighbors outside. Then, write down where you saw all the Squatch Squad seals, or snap a pic. Try to find as many Squatch Squad seals as you can!

Credit where credit is due! We were inspired to make this post thanks to this article from LifeHacker. Thanks to Jillian Quint and LifeHacker for the great idea.

Now get out there and begin the hunt! Share your adventures around your neighborhood using #RCJrAtHome so we can see how you and your family are playing. Make sure to ask a parent or guardian before using the Internet.
